The Clearwater and Azure Lake Chain has been rated as one of the top five canoe trips in Canada and are a must-do on your Wells Gray adventure list. These two lakes offer you the beauty and serenity of the backcountry with easy access to the Cariboo Mountains. Find your bliss with 16 camping areas, three backcountry trail heads and epic waterfalls that cascade into the lake. Each lake is 22kkm long with a 500-metre portage between the lakes. Clearwater Lake lies at the very end of the Clearwater Valley Road and has a dedicated boat launch for motorized boats and paddlers. With a number of guides and outfitters, you can plan the perfect day trip or multi-day paddle trip.

World-Renowned Murtle Lake

Paddle into untouched landscapes as you glide along glacier fed Murtle Lake in Wells Gray Park, North America’s largest non-motorized lake. Its sun-kissed sandy shores can only be accessed by canoe or kayak after an adventurous 27-km drive on a winding gravel road and a 2.5-km portage through an old-growth forest of hemlock and cedar. A favourite amoung canoeists, this backcountry paradise is one you’ll want to return to.

Dotted with campsites and outfitted with fire-rings, food caches and all the peace and quiet you crave, this is canoe camping at its best where the only sounds you’ll hear are the wind on the trees, the splash of your fishing line and the sound of dinner sizzling in your frying pan. Dutch Lake is a small and scenic lake perfect for paddling or swimming on a hot summer day. Located right in the heart of Clearwater it has a sandy beach and picnic area where you’ll find it’s easy to unwind. The local accommodations dotting the lake offer canoe and SUP rentals.
